James Kerwin Slopey
August 10, 1934 – February 20, 2024
James K. Slopey (Jim), age 89, of Pittsburgh, PA, passed away Tuesday, February 20th, at Family Hospice at Canterbury Place. The last words he heard were “I love you” from his family as he left behind the physical ailments of this world and reunited with his late, beloved wife, Marcia.
Jim had humble beginnings in the rural town of New Millport in central PA. He graduated from Penn State University, then served briefly in the U.S. Navy before embarking on a successful career in insurance sales and investments in Pittsburgh, PA. Jim and Marcia resided in Penn Hills where they lovingly raised their children, Greg (Dee), Tami Ribar (Tom), and their special guy, Brad.
Jim was very active in both his community and his church, Trinity Tower United Methodist Church. He was instrumental in starting the Shining Arrow recreational program for special needs children. If you asked Jim, he “never had a bad day!” He generously shared his love of life and faith by sending many greeting cards and volunteering in multiple capacities. He knew so many nooks and crannies throughout the state as he drove many miles for work, serving his clients everywhere. Never one to sit still for long, he ran in 5 Pittsburgh marathons and even went skydiving at the age of 87. His most cherished times were vacations and trips with his family and friends including his beloved grandchildren, Jessa, Lexi, and Nathan (Lydia). In his later years, his great grandchildren, Avery, Riley, Beau, and Parker, always brought a smile to his face.
Jim will be greatly missed by his many friends. His family will lovingly remember him whenever they are driving through rural PA, eating pie, cheering on the Buccos, or walking on the beach.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be made to Trinity Tower Church, Shining Arrow Association, Family Hospice, or a charity of your choosing.
A Memorial Service for Jim will be held at Trinity Tower United Methodist Church in Penn Hills, PA on Saturday March 30, 2024 at 2PM. A luncheon will follow the service.
